Dates for Maryland & Virginia Tax-Free Shopping Holiday Have Been Announced

Although it seems like summer just arrived, the start of school is just around the corner. To help with back-to-school shopping the dates for tax free days have been announced for Maryland and Virginia. Here's what you need to know:

VIRGINIA:

WHEN: Friday, Aug. 1 through Sunday, Aug. 3

WHAT: Virginia will give shoppers a break from paying sales tax on qualifying school supplies, clothing, footwear, hurricane and emergency preparedness items, and Energy Star and WaterSense products.

That includes qualifying school supplies costing $20 or less per item and qualifying clothing and footwear costing $100 or less per item.

MARYLAND:

WHEN: Sunday, Aug. 10 through Saturday, Aug. 16

WHAT: Shoppers won't have to pay Maryland's 6% sales tax on clothing or footwear that costs $100 or less.

A spokesperson for the Maryland comptroller's office said more details will be coming, in the meantime you can look at last year's last year's FAQ to see what is likely going to be tax-free.
