Jennifer Garner understands the importance of community.

In a new interview with Marie Claire UK, the 13 Going On 30 actress made rare comments about her "hard" split from ex-husband Ben Affleck. The former couple were married for 10 years before separating in 2015 and divorcing three years later, per People. They share three children: Violet, 20, Seraphina, 17, and Samuel, 13.

Touching on the media attention surrounding the end of their marriage, Garner explained that while the public's opinions and "gossip" were a lot to take in, the actual difficulty was their family dynamic changing so drastically.

"You have to be smart about what you can and can't handle, and I could not handle what was out there," she said. "But what was out there was not what was hard. The fact of it is what was hard. The actual breaking up of a family is what was hard. Losing a true partnership and friendship is what was hard."

To navigate the turbulent change in her life, Garner leaned on her support systems and the loved ones surrounding her, an effort she continues today.

"I make a big, concerted effort to see my people as much as I can, because that's what matters," she said. "That's where your resilience is: it's in your relationships and in the people who carry you through."
